Red by Jessi McPherson – a novella Review!

r- my reviewIn the most recent past, I’ve hosted a tour for Halfling and been given the opportunity to do a book tour for Even Halos Can Be Crooked with Siver Dagger Book Tours. When I saw the request for hosts for the book tour for Red by Jessi McPherson, I was intrigued and signed up.

There were a couple of reasons I was intrigued. First, the cover caught my attention. It’s bold, simple, yet eye-catching. Then there was the fact that this is a YA Fairy Tale retelling of the classic Grimm tale of Little Red Riding Hood. I’m currently writing a YA Fairy Tale retelling and was curious if this story would be anything like mine even though it’s a different Fairy Tale than the one I’ve chosen.

As I write my YA tale, I have a teeny tiny worry that someone else might come up with a similar idea. I was pleased to find that both our stories are completely unique – phew! I mean, I figured they would be but you never know. Fairy Tale retellings are very popular right now,  although, a lot that I have been seeing are reverse harem tales. Thankfully, that is not the case with Red.

This author is new to me and I did receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review along with hosting the book tour. I was surprised it was a novella. The advertising made me think it was a full length book – so here’s my head’s up – this is a novella. 🙂

The premise of the story and how it was pitched with the tale of Little Red Riding Hood being not what we know it to be was strong.

I’m going to be honest, I’m torn on how to review this novella. The plot was well thought out. The twist on the tale was definitely unique. The language was short and to the point which is part of keeping a book a novella length. I did find the strongest paragraph was the last one.

I don’t want to get into too many details because I don’t want to give away the twists. There were a few surprises and a sweet romance. If you would like a new take on the classic Red Riding Hood tale, then definitely give Red a try.
